We’re enjoying bountiful harvests of salad greens, cucumbers, snap peas, carrots, zucchini, and green beans. We’ll have lots of broccoli, cabbage, kale, and collards for another week or so. We’ll still be sowing late crops of limas, southern peas, okra, melons, and corn through mid-July. We harvest our gardens frequently for best yields. This is especially important with long harvest crops like pole beans and okra. Letting a few green beans or okra pods mature can send a message to the plant to stop producing. So pick early and often! | When Summer Begins, It’s Time to Plant for Fall Summer has only just arrived, but by late June we’re already turning our attention to starting a bountiful fall garden. In late June we sow fall Brussels sprouts in shaded seedling beds, and in July we sow broccoli, cabbage, collards, and, late in the month, Chinese cabbage. Our own Ken Bezilla offers great tips in his Fall & Winter Gardening Guide. | Moving Forward in Family Farmers Against Monsanto A new ruling in the ongoing battle: Appeals Court Binds Monsanto to Promise Not to Sue Organic Farmers | We’re transplanting out late season tomatoes, peppers, and melons for the tasting tent at the Heritage Harvest Festival at Monticello, September 6–7th, 2013. Southern Exposure, the Piedmont Environmental Council, and many local farms work together with a small army of volunteers to bring you more than 100 heirloom varieties to taste. heritageharvestfestival.com | | | Last Chance for Certified Organic Seed Potatoes! This week is your last chance to order our certified organic seed potatoes for a late potato planting. Yields are often lower from later plantings, but the storage quality is better – cool temperatures at harvest make for better storage conditions. | Upcoming Events Catch Ira’s talk or stop by our booth to say hello at one of these upcoming events. | | | | | | |
